Famunera among the 6 innovative winners of the NSSF Hi-innovator 2019
Famunera, a mobile platform that smallholder farmers use to buy high quality affordable agriculture inputs from verified suppliers and also sell their farm produce to verified agro processors (agro buyers) in Uganda, NSSF Hi-innovator recognized it's positive impact on the livelihoods of over 10,000 smallholder farmers across Uganda since its official launch in June, 2016.
The NSSF Hi-innovator received applications from over 150 start-up businesses, 18 of them were selected as finalists and finally only 6 emerged as the winners that portrayed high scalability potential and innovativeness.
Apart from Famunera the other winners were; Obuntu Bwa Casalina, Chap Chap, Imani Academy, Hamwe East Africa and Taheca. These start-ups were awarded with $20,000 as seed fund which will be given to them on milestone basis during the 6 months of their accelerator programme. After the 6 months of incubation, NSSF will again assist the start-ups to access both local and international credible investors to invest more capital into them of up to $2M
Naika Julius, the CEO stated "Famunera is going to use its $20,000 seed fund to launch its USSD platform, a short-code platform which doesn't require internet that smallholder farmers are going to be using conveniently on their feature mobile (Kabiliti) phones to not only easily buy high quality affordable agriculture inputs and find market for their farm produce, but also will be able to save for inputs, get agriculture loans, access weather forecast and real-time market information".
Currently, Famunera is raising its seed round of investment to scale its operations across Uganda in the next 3 years where it will serve up to 60,000 farmers with high quality affordable agriculture inputs from verified suppliers, create 3,000 indirect jobs for the youths and link up to 30,000 farmers to reliable market for their farm produce from verified bulk agro buyers.
